4 Tips for Starting to Network

As we continue into the digital age, we hear more and more about how people are losing the ability to connect face to face. The importance of networking in business hasn’t diminished—in fact, quite the opposite.

Here at Acquirent, we know that many people may feel awkward or uncomfortable whenever the word “networking” comes up, but it’s really not as hard as many people think. In fact, we’ve compiled four easy ways to get started.

  • Reconnect – connecting with new people can seem daunting, so why not get started by reconnecting with people you already know? Finding old friends and classmates on Facebook and LinkedIn is an excellent way to connect with a lot of people in a short amount of time. Following companies and joining groups is a great way to use LinkedIn, see Acquirent’s LinkedIn company page .
  • Think ahead – let’s say you had to start a brand new job search today. Who would be the first person you’d go to for help? The second? The fifth? Think hard about these relationships, and make sure you’re doing what you can to strengthen them. You don’t want to wait until you need help to start fostering these relationships!
  • Ask for introductions – for some people, it can be intimidating to go up to a complete stranger and introduce yourself. The good news is you don’t have to! Asking mutual contacts to introduce you to someone not only makes for a less awkward introduction, but it often leaves a better impression on your new acquaintance.
  • Don’t overstretch yourself – part of the reason a networking event can seem so stressful is that it’s an information overload. There are so many people. Instead of feel rushed trying to meet as many people as possible, focus instead on really getting to know two or three people.

Hopefully you’ll put these tips to good use and remember that networking can land you your next job, find you your next best friend or get you involved in a meaningful volunteering opportunity.
