Speaker Series: Larry Hirsch, Sales Manager at Tom James Company

The workday at ACQ starts early, 8 a.m. sharp, and frequently we host guest speakers who tell inspirational personal and career stories that get us going better than any cup of coffee. We have a great thing going at our morning meetings, like TED talks but ACQ Talks just more intimate.

Recently we heard from Larry Hirsch, a haberdasher in Downtown Chicago for Tom James, who has been selling fine men’s clothes door to door for more than 25 years. He titled his list of tips “Simple Steps” and each tip is simple indeed and if executed simultaneously will lead to success. We thought it would benefit anyone reading this post, so we’re sharing the tips with you. Good luck on your path to success!

10 Simple Steps for Success

  • Just show up “but early” (it shows eagerness and being committed)
  • Do a little more than asked, those things get noticed
  • Don’t stop on “yes”, it’s often the ticket to bigger sales
  • Listen instead of talk so you can find out what makes your client tick
  • Go the extra mile! Those things can get remembered when your clients thinks of your product
  • Think of yourself as your own marketing company
  • Have a great attitude, dress well and smile, it’s contagious and changes your attitude too!
  • Be thankful, grateful and show appreciation
  • Have a goal and write it down, attach a picture to it and work toward it every day. Your work is just a vehicle to achieving your goal.
  • Break big goals down to daily activity that you need to do to achieve it
