Free Advice for Startups: Focus on Sales!

Branching out and forming your own startup company is one of the most exhilarating business decisions one can take. Unfortunately, for too many business owners it’s also one that doesn’t work out as they hoped. For every innovative new startup taking the industry by storm, there are several that never saw the light of day. One key pitfall that many new startups get trapped in is not focusing enough on sales. You’ve got a great product and the expertise to succeed in the industry—but without the skills and knowledge to see it to potential clients, your business isn’t going anywhere.

Many startups treat sales as an afterthought, or assume that they’ll work themselves out once the product development and financial aspects of the new business are taken care of. In reality, the startups that succeed are the ones that incorporate sales into their business plan from the get-go. Remember, no matter how great your product is, at the end of the day it isn’t going to sell itself. That’s up to you to make it happen.

So before you jump into your startup, have a clear vision of what your sales pipeline will look like. Answer the four questions below with your entire team before doing anything else;

  • Who are your target clients?
  • How will you reach them?
  • What’s your pitch strategy?
  • What makes you better than your competitors?

Working out every aspect of the sales side of your business before moving forward will save you some headaches—and some cash—down the road.
